Australian 1988 Proof Eight Coin Year Set – Celebrating the Bicentennial of Australia
And the Introduction of the $2 Coin replacing the $2 Note
The bicentenary of Australia was celebrated in 1988. It marked 200 years since the arrival of the First Fleet of British convict ships at Sydney in 1788.
This outstanding proof collection is of the eight Australian coins in circulation, featuring new designs for both the one dollar and fifty cent coins. Also included for the first time is the distinctive new Australian two dollar coin which replaced the two dollar note and is the second major addition to Australia’s coinage since 1966.
The introduction of the two dollar coin coincides with Australia’s Bicentenary. The reverse was designed by the Royal Australian Mint’s Chief Engraver, Horst Hahne, depicts the bust of a traditional Aboriginal set against a background of the Southern Cross and Australia’s flora. The flora depicted is of the Xanthorrhoea species commonly known as a grass tree and is found in all States of Australia.
The reverse design for the one dollar features Aboriginal art and culture. The design by Stuart Devlin is a simple kangaroo depicted against a background of linear motifs and pebbles is similar in style to traditional Aboriginal art. Whilst the linear motifs do not identify any particular Aboriginal tribe, there are characteristics of the Arnhemland group.
Another link with Australia’s past in this Bicentennial year is featured on the reverse of the fifty cent coin. The design by Michael Tracy, a sailing ship set against an old map of Australia and the Southern Cross commemorates early European exploration of Australia.
The proof coins are struck from specially prepared blanks using highly polished and frosted dies. To reduce the possibility of tarnishing the coins are packed in a specially designed case which is sealed by ultrasonic welding.
