Australian 1991 Proof Eight Coin Year Set from the Royal Australian Mint – Final 8 Coin Proof Set
Date Listed 20/09/2018
Australian 1991 Proof Eight Coin Year Set – Commemorating 25 Years of Decimal Currency.
This set is truly worth collecting. It not only commemorates Australia’s 25th Anniversary of decimal currency by featuring a special fifty cent coin, but also symbolises the end of the era by including final issue 1c and 2c coins which will no longer be minted after this final minting of 1991 dated coins.
Seven of the coins feature animals. The feathertail glider curls up on the one cent coin. The five cent coin is home to the spiny ant-eater. The ten and twenty cent coins display two more unique Australians, the lyrebird and the platypus and perhaps the best know Australian of all, the kangaroo is shown on the one dollar coin. The two dollar coin features a portrait of Australia’s earliest human inhabitant, the aborigine. But it is the new release fifty cent coin that should have special appeal. In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of decimal currency, Mint designer Horst Hahne reproduces the merino ram head that originally appeared on Australia’s pre-decimal shilling. The merino design not only acknowledges the contribution of the Australian Wool Industry to this country’s development but equally serves as a unique reminder to Australia’s pre-decimal days.
Proof coins reflect the ultimate in Mint craftsmanship and offer the best investment potential to collectors. The proof coins in this set are struck from hand-polished dies, using blanks with a smooth, bright surface. The resultant coin is a masterpiece of flawless beauty with the flat surface of the coin having a mirror-like finish and the raised surface, or design delicately frosted. Once minting is complete all dies are destroyed.
