Australian 1994 Proof Six Coin Year Set Celebrating the International Year of the Family
The United Nations declared 1994 the International Year of the Family. In an effort to raise awareness of the good things about family life, the future of families through our children and the diverse nature of the Australian family, the Royal Australian Mint held a nation-wide competition to design a commemorative fifty cent coin. That coin, displaying the prize-winning design of Carolyn Rosser, is the feature of this 1994 Coin Set.
Carolyn’s view of the meaning of the Year of the Family is reflected in her design: “In Australia there are many types of families and the bonds which link these families are diverse. The image I have used is deliberately ambiguous in the sense that it is not representative of any particular race, religion or gender. The design is bold and friendly with an element of fun and without emphasis on the individual. The strength of the lines is symbolic of the strength of the family as a unit and communicates the positivity of the family.”
The proof coins in this set reflect the ultimate in Mint craftmanship. They are struck from hand-polished dies, using specially prepared blanks with a smooth, bright surface. The resultant coin is a masterpiece of flawless beauty with the flat surface of the coin having a mirror-like surface while the raised design is delicately frosted. Once minting is complete, all dies are destroyed.
