Australian 2009 International Year of Astronomy Two Coin Proof Sets
“Astronomy compels the soul to look upwards and leads us from this world to another” Plato 448 B.C – 328 B.C
Astronomy is one of the oldest sciences and in 2009 we celebrate globally the 400th anniversary of Galileo Galilei’s first astronomical observation through a telescope.
The vision of the International Year of Astronomy was helping people rediscover their place in the universe with a strong emphasis on education, public engagement and involvement from young people of all communities.
To celebrate the International Year of Astronomy in 2009, the Royal Australian Mint released this outstanding two coin proof set. The event, backed by the United Nations and UNESCO, had a theme of “The Universe, Yours to Discover”.
The aim of International Year of Astronomy in Australia was to emphasise the country’s contributions to international astronomy, and to raise awareness of the cultural and educational significance of the night sky. The release of the two coin set encouraged greater awareness of the night sky to all Australians and enthusiasts worldwide, in a beautifully presented memento.
This set consists of a Five Kangaroos $1 coin and a unique 20 cent piece, featuring an image of star-gazers against a star-chart backdrop, specially designed by the Royal Australian Mint’s designer Caitlin Goodall, both in a stunning proof finish.
