2013 BIRDS OF AUSTRALIA FIVE “½ oz” SILVER PROOF COINS

This coin program was inspired by the birds that inhabit the continent of Australia. Because of the nation’s island status, many of these species are unique and breathtakingly beautiful. Beginning with the characterful Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo, and followed by the Budgerigar, Regent Bowerbird, Rainbow Lorikeet and Splendid Fairy-Wren, this series is not one to be missed. These colourful birds have been brought to life with stunning artistry and attention to detail, by the inspired hand of designer Natasha Muhl.

The first coin in the series was the Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo. The coin portrays a Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo in colour perched on a struck wooden log. The Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo is a raucous, noisy, black parrot found throughout Australia where it lives in a variety of habitats – temperate forests, woodland and dense tropical rainforest. Large flocks are often observed in the morning or just before dusk. Females have a banded orange/red tail, while the striking red panels on the male’s tail gives this species its name. Mintage: 8,651

The second coin in this series was the Budgerigar. The coin portrays a Budgerigar in colour and delicate representations of Australian vegetation. A beautiful, small green and yellow parrot, the Budgerigar lives wild in the wide open spaces of inland Australia. A nomadic bird, it flies in groups in search of water and the seeds of native herbs and grasses. Budgerigars are inclined to breed in years of abundant rainfall. Born naked and helpless, young Budgerigars typically fledge after about five weeks. In good years, huge flocks of birds can be seen twisting and turning in unison in the sky. Mintage: 4,859

The third release in the series was the Regent Bowerbird. The coin portrays a male & female Regent Bowerbird in colour, headed by the inscription REGENT BOWERBIRD. Bird enthusiasts will know the male to be a velvety black colour with a gleaming yellow crown, mantle and tipped wing feathers, while the female is olive brown with white markings. An Australian endemic, the Regent Bowerbird is distributed to rainforests and margins of eastern Australia, from central Queensland to New South Wales. Minatge: 4,977

The fourth release in the series features the Rainbow Lorikeet. The coin portrays a Rainbow Lorikeet in colour, headed by the inscription RAINBOW LORIKEET. The Rainbow Lorikeet is unmistakable with its bright red beak and colourful plumage, and is often seen in loud and fast-moving flocks at dusk. This vivid bird occupies habitats in the coastal regions across northern and eastern Australia, with a local population in Perth, Western Australia. Mintage: 4,868

The final release in the series features the vibrant Splendid Fairy-wren. Captured in colour, the coin portrays a bright blue male Splendid Fairy-wren in the foreground and a grey-brown female in the background, headed by the inscription SPLENDID FAIRY-WREN. Widely distributed in south-west and inland south-east Australia, the Splendid Fairy-wren inhabits dense shrubs and woodlands. Living in small groups, this jaunty bird hops and bounces among the undergrowth in search of insects. Mintage: 4,285

The weighing of the heart is the ancient Egyptian depiction of what happens at death. Anubis brings the Initiate before Osiris, who is one of forty-two divine judges, to have his heart (symbolizing the way he has spent his life) weighed upon the scales of justice against that of the feather (representing Ma’at – the universal order). If the scales are balanced, he has been judged to have achieved ...
