Australian 2008 International Year of Planet Earth Two Coin Proof Set - First introduction of the Two Coin Sets by the Royal Australian Mint
2008 was the International Year of Planet Earth. The aim of this celebration was to demonstrate to the global community the universal knowledge base of geosciences. The Royal Australian Mint specially designed 2008 proof and uncirculated Year Sets have incorporated some of the themes identified by Geoscience Australia, assisting in creating a positive awareness of sustaining planet Earth’s resources and health.
The ‘International Year of Planet Earth’ in 2008 promoted research in the Earth Sciences. The aim of the International Year was to demonstrate new ways in which Earth Sciences can help future generations meet the challenges involved in ensuring a safer and more prosperous world. Among the key areas of study for the ‘International Year of Planet Earth’ are aspects of climate change and water resources. As Australia struggles with the aftermath of drought, these subjects are especially relevant to the Australian experience.
The 2008 Two Coin Proof Set complements the Six Coin Proof Set and features the standard $1 coin circulating design and the special International Year of Planet Earth 20c coin design. Mint designer Vladimir Gottwald created a design for the 20c coin that portrays the effects of tsunami, floods, earthquakes and salinity, both in proof finish.
